Spiderman is more than just a character with awesome abilities and a cool costume; he’s the classic example of a nice-guy-turned super-hero trying to come to terms with his newfound powers. Spiderman’s human side captivates us. When he’s not in costume, he seems to struggle with the same everyday problems we all share. But when the suit goes on, Spiderman is a web-slinging crusader against evil.
In the Spiderman comic, high school nerd Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) was bitten by a radioactive spider. This detail was altered in the movie series, where Peter was bitten instead by a genetically modified spider. Either way, Peter’s body underwent mutations that left him with spider-like abilities. All of a sudden, he could shoot webs from his wrists, climb buildings, jump long distances, and react faster than any human. |
Of course, super powers don’t solve every problem. Peter lives in New York with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, who struggle to make ends meet. In the first Spiderman film, Peter’s uncle is killed during a carjacking. This leads to real financial woes for Aunt May, and guilt for Peter when he learns that the thief who killed his uncle was a criminal he’d allowed to escape during a previous crime. Peter is also secretly in love with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), his neighbor and long-time friend and schoolmate. Unfortunately, she’s dating Peter’s rich, handsome friend, Harry Osborn (James Franco).
Mary Jane develops a crush on Spiderman after he saves her life, not realizing that Peter is the boy behind the mask. When Harry walks in on an intimate conversation between the two, he storms off to talk to his father who, unbeknownst to all, terrorizes New York under the guise of the Green Goblin (Willem DaFoe). When the Green Goblin learns that Spiderman loves Mary Jane, he kidnaps her and forces Spidey to choose between rescuing his true love or saving a cable car full of children. The superhero manages to save both before vanquishing the Green Goblin.
In Spiderman 2, Peter is still having trouble balancing his secret identity with his regular life. Harry wants revenge on Spiderman for killing his father. Mary Jane is engaged to marry John Jameson, a rich astronaut and son of the Daily Bugle editor. To make matters worse, a new villain, Doctor Octopus, arrives on the scene and puts Mary Jane in danger once more.
Spiderman 3 throws a whole slew of challenges at Peter. He faces off against the villain Sandman. Harry Osborn, spurred by hallucinations of his dead father, becomes the New Goblin and seeks to destroy Peter. Then an extra-terrestrial parasite takes hold of Peter’s Spiderman suit and causes him to misbehave. It later turns a rival photographer into one of Spiderman’s toughest opponents: Venom. As if that weren’t enough, Peter also finds himself in a love triangle between Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy.
The Spiderman saga is a bittersweet study of power and its effects on the human spirit. It’s also a timeless favorite, with Spiderman merchandise and Halloween costumes continuing to be top sellers year after year.
