Spongebob Squarepants

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob SquarePants! SpongeBob makes his underwater home in Bikini Bottom, a fictional lagoon at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. His next-door neighbor, the evil genius Squidward, can’t stand SpongeBob or the dumb but likeable starfish, Patrick. Fortunately, Squidward’s plans to thwart the duo often end in failure.

When SpongeBob isn’t getting into (and out of) sticky situations with Patrick, he can usually be found flipping Krab Patties at the Krusty Krab restaurant. He’s been employee of the month several times. Squidward also works at the Krusty Krab, as the cashier. He just can’t catch a break from his annoying yellow neighbor! Of course, SpongeBob is rather naïve, so he would probably be deeply hurt if he ever realized how much Squidward hates him.  Now one of the most popular Halloween costumes available.

At home, SpongeBob likes to relax, blow bubbles with Patrick, go ‘jellyfishing’ (an undersea version of birdwatching), and play with his pet snail, Gary. When he’s out and about, SpongeBob is frequently trying to pass his boating test or inadvertently destroying Bikini Bottom – which always returns, unharmed, in the next episode. Besides Patrick, SpongeBob has another close friend named Sandy. She’s a squirrel from Texas who does karate and studies Bikini Bottom at the behest of her intelligent chimpanzee masters.

SpongeBob SquarePants has been a hit television series since 1999. The appeal of a wide-eyed, squeaky-clean sponge with buck teeth was questionable at first, but the show quickly developed a huge following. SpongeBob’s surprising popularity is thanks, in part, to the show’s unique sense of humor. It manages to appeal to adults while remaining appropriate for a younger audience. SpongeBob and Patrick have an innocent gullibility that gets them into trouble time and again. Their shenanigans are fun to watch. In the tradition of The Simpsons and other generation-spanning cartoons, SpongeBob Squarepants frequently features cameos from celebrities such as Johnny Depp, Scarlett Johanson, and even rock bands like Pantera and Twisted Sister. Gene Simmons of Kiss once made a (vocal) appearance as a sea monster.

In 2004, The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie made its debut. In it, SpongeBob and Patrick frantically race to retrieve Neptune’s crown to prevent the execution of Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob’s boss who was framed for the theft. After locating the crown, SpongeBob and Patrick are captured, dehydrated, and almost sold as souvenirs. They manage to escape and clear Mr. Krabs’ name in the nick of time. The movie brought in over $18 million worldwide, and a second installment, SpongeBob Squarepants: The Great Escape, is planned for November 2009.

SpongeBob has earned global appreciation. What began as a low-budget cartoon soon snowballed into a franchise of epic proportions. Now you can find SpongeBob-themed televisions, Burger King toys, DVD players, and amusement park rides. SpongeBob is also a popular Halloween costume for kids of all ages. In 2007, Time Magazine listed SpongeBob SquarePants as one of the greatest television series of all time. Who knew that a little yellow sponge could lead such a full and rewarding life?
