Kate Gosselin is a reality TV celebrity, author, and occasional guest host on TV chat shows.  Kate and her soon to be ex husband Jon Gosselin became the subject of the popular reality TV show Jon and Kate + Eight after being featured in several documentary reality shows about the birth of their sextuplets.  The couple have a set of twins who were born in 2000, and then conceived septuplets after undergoing several fertility treatments. One of the septuplets died in utero, but the six others were delivered and joined the twins to round the Gosselin family at 8 kids, all around the same age. After several tumultuous years in the spotlight Jon and Kate announced in the summer of 2009 that they were divorcing due to the pressures of living in the public eye.
Americans were fascinated by the Gosselins, particularly Kate Gosselin, after the first special featuring their enormous family ran on The Learning Channel.  A second special was planned after the first because of the huge ratings that the first one received. After the second documentary special the couple was signed to their show, Jon and Kate + Eight, which documented how the family adjusted to having sextuplets and twins and followed them to find out what their daily lives were like. The show was an instant hit and eventually the show moved to The Discovery Channel.

Kate Gosselin became infamous because of her behavior on the show. She was seen as domineering, mean to Jon and the kids, and someone who really liked to be in control of every detail of their lives. Several times she put Jon down on national TV or belittled his ability to support his family. In one famous instance a video of Kate Gosselin and the children waiting in the Green Room of a TV studio for a TV appearance aired on the Internet showing Kate being mean to the kids. One of her daughters asked for a glass of water. Kate didn't give her daughter any water, but poured a glass for herself and drank it in front of the thirsty toddler. As that video became a viral hit online Kate's reputation as a cold, mean, woman grew and so did the show's ratings. 
Tabloids have been covering Kate Gosselin for years, slamming her for her hairstyle, her alleged affair with her bodyguard, and for using her children to make money. Since the Gosselins have become famous Kate has written two book s and travels extensively making personal appearances. She has also accepted thousands of dollars worth of free products and services including plastic surgery, professional styling, clothing, trips, and other goods. She is often accused of using her children to make money.

Since the split both Jon and Kate have been in the headlines frequently. Jon has given several interviews where he has said that the public perception of Kate is accurate and that she is just as mean and nasty as she appears in the show.  Kate has said that she plans to continue with Jon and Kate + Eight, with her and Jon taking turns living in the house with the kids for filming, but The Discovery Channel has put the show on hiatus while producers try to figure out if viewers have had enough of Jon and Kate.
